link Hybrowse

The always interesting Jakob Lodwick’s new project (is Normative dead? That interested me far more than the Odwick stuff.) This is pretty close to exactly what I’m looking for to index web content, assuming the tagging is done well. Link is to Netflix/Classics/Instant, but it’s easy enough to shift around the tags to filter content quickly and efficiently. I’ll be curious to see how this develops.

Can’t help noticing that an excellent use of this type of Netflix filtering would be the Netflix apps on Boxee/Roku/PS3, etc. Zach Klein’s work over there would make a Boxee mashup the most obvious choice.

link Browser Statistics

So…is it official now that Firefox has surpassed Internet Explorer as the most dominant web browser? By my count, that’s about 47% Firefox, 40% IE (IE6, IE7, IE8), 10% WebKit (Chrome & Safari), and 2% Opera.

To be fair, these logs are primarily from W3C’s site and probably reflect the large amount of web developers who consult their code dictionary via Firefox or WebKit.

Interesting points: IE6 is STILL more dominant than IE8 (13% to 10%), though IE7 leads (barely) with 15%. Google Chrome, thanks undoubtedly to its prominent push on the Google home page, is actually the most dominant WebKit browser. Safari’s 3.3% seems surprisingly low to me.

Of course, none of this really matters for smaller sites; target audience counts more. I just threw together a small site for a local street hockey league (gldhc.com) and spent half of my time correcting for IE6 because the local school system still suffers through an IE6 addiction. Painful.

quote
As more great new companies are absorbed into big old companies, a whole new generation of change is lost. They can issue press releases saying how excited they are to be able to bring their product to a whole new world of customers, and how their new suitor will bring enormous resources to bear, but we know that’s usually not really what happens. Development slows, products stall, the staff that built the great stuff leaves, and mediocrity creeps in. Not always, but usually.

The next generation bends over - (37signals) (via theopie)

I actually deleted my account when I saw the deal. I had high hopes for Mint, but Intuit’s software and general presence has always turned me off. I wasn’t entirely comfortable handing over my financial details to a third party anyway, and this was the little push over the edge. Of course, I reserve the right to change my mind if they continue to innovate and the absorption works out.

Hat tip to Dave Winer

bijan:

Back in early 2007, I was itching for a way to automatically tweet links to my photos on Flickr.

A few months later, Dave Winer wrote a web service called Flickr-to-Twitter. Dave was nice enough to give me access back then and I wrote about it at the time. And for the past two years, that’s how I’ve been posting flickr links to Twitter for the most part.

Since then a number of 3rd party apps have emerged to post photo links on Twitter. Many of them are fantastic. Simple & fast.

Earlier this week, Flickr announced that they had officially integrated with Twitter. It provides much of the same functionality as Dave’s original application with some additional bells & whistles.

It’s terrific that Yahoo built this into Flickr. It will help many users tie together two great products in a simple way.

But right now I’d like to say thanks to Dave for building his app. I appreciated it then and I appreciate it now.

Excellent, I had missed this (tangentially, seems like I don’t spend ANY time on Flickr anymore, which is sad). I noticed they had added the flic.kr shortening into their source code a few months back, and I’ve used this helpful bookmarklet since then in an effort to avoid TwitPic.

Kilroy Reunion

Helped out with some group photos at a friend’s family reunion this past weekend, and just sent along the finished files. I recently decided on Zenfolio for gallery sharing/printing, and I was pretty happy to see that they just installed an embeddable gallery module. This was one of the last things I missed from playing around with Photoshelter. I think I actually like this one better.

photo Somewhat obnoxious/vaguely threatening email from 8tracks, a site that tried to fill the Muxtape space. I can understand that they’re trying to cover themselves legally to stay alive, but the one mix I did make (protopunk mix) when trying it out doesn’t actually meet these conditions at all. My entire description: “Loose definition, my own choice. Concentrated on attitude, pushing the limits vocally, instrumentally, lyrically…” No artists or track names mentioned at all, never mind three of them. FAIL, 8tracks.
EDIT:
Oops, apparently I had a second mix (Great Covers) that didn’t show up when I first went over to the 8tracks page, and it did, in fact, have FOUR artists listed in the description. Apologies for the mildly irritated post. Though I still don’t like the legalese tone of the email.

photo I like the new Tumblr iPhone interface. It’s cleaner, responsive, focused on content, and more efficiently spaced. I can’t shake the feeling that it FEELS different though. Not worse, just different. Perhaps this is Jacob Bijani’s design influence?

Also, it amuses me that my quick screenshot of the app includes Blake Whitman, who was also featured on the staff post. Small coincidences always do.
