The Wrestler - Official Trailer (via FoxSearchlight)
Brilliant performance by Mickey Rourke that will probably earn him a well-deserved Oscar.
However…it’s a goddamned crime that The Wrestler didn’t garner a Best Picture or Directing nomination in a somewhat weak year. Aronofsky’s vision and execution were flawless. This film had an understated and measured pace that he hasn’t exhibited in the past, and I love Pi, Requiem for a Dream, and The Fountain. He presented this story the way it needed to be told, left the sentimentality and happy endings to the romantic comedies, and worked tirelessly to draw a career performance out of Hollywood’s most famous underachiever, the gifted and flawed Rourke. If that’s not a Best Director, I don’t know what is.
For the record, of the movies I’ve seen so far, I’d vote for Slumdog Millionaire for Best Picture and The Wrestler for Director. I’m surprised that Gran Torino didn’t get a nod for Best Picture or Actor; the voters usually love Clint Eastwood and it was deserving. Dark Knight was snubbed, but I think that had more to do with the last twenty minutes than with the fact it was a comic book movie. Milk is probably the remaining film I’m most excited about.
