Oscar Picks - Best Picture

No Country for Old Men

I thought it was brilliantly directed, a departure of sorts for the Coen brothers but one that they nailed. The sweeping vistas of West Texas, the tightly-wound parallel storylines, and the tension that built throughout the film helped this to edge out a really great year of nominees. Cormac McCarthy’s novel made for a nearly cover-to-cover adaptation, and perhaps works even better as a screenplay than as literature. Spare, unflinching, and occasionally downright nihilistic. All three actors put in career-defining roles, with Javier Bardem stealing the show with his dead eyes and coin-flip morality.

I still have a feeling that There will be Blood may sneak in for the win, given that its story will resonate with the many Californian voters in the Academy. I would certainly be ok with that outcome, as it was a quantum leap for Paul Thomas Anderson and a Best Actor shoo-in performace from Daniel Day Lewis. After that, I’d probably rank them as 3. Michael Clayton; 4. Atonement; and 5. Juno. All are good nominees.
