More About Me

Used to be the anti-hero was a bad guy we secretly liked. Then, with Brando, we got a bad guy we didn’t like. An now, in “Cool Hand Luke,” we get a good guy who becomes a bad guy because he doesn’t like us.

I’ll occasionally disagree strongly with Ebert (see his Clockwork Orange review), but he’s been doing this a very long time and is right on most of the time. This description of Paul Newman’s Cool Hand Luke (my all-time favorite) nails the evolution of the anti-hero and its importance to the history of film. Brando and Newman forged the path; every dark and real and wonderful character since then is in their debt.
