– Cormac McCarthy in Blood Meridian. Glittering, deceptively vicious prose at every turn. You really have to get a fuller account of ‘the judge’ to appreciate just how fascinating a character this is and just what kind of experience informs this slice of philosophy. Read this book, you...

The Jabberwocky
`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe: All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe.
“Beware the Jabberwock, my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch! Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun The frumious Bandersnatch!”
He took his vorpal sword in hand: Long time the manxome foe he sought — So rested he by the Tumtum tree, And stood...
Safari 4 beta, day 2
OK, so it only took a day for Safari 4 to supplant Camino as my simple browser of choice, mostly because of the javascript handling…but I just noticed a rash of spinning beachballs and was a little horrified to realize Safari was clocking in at 534mb of RAM.
Yes, I probably had a total of 20 or so tabs open in a couple windows, but 534? That puts notorious memory-hog Firefox to shame.

Safari 4 beta insta-review
Immediate impression? Fast, fast, fast. I almost never use Safari on my iMac, tending to alternate between Firefox and Camino, but I may have to start giving Safari equal share. The javascript numbers they’re trumpeting seem legit in real-world usage, and some of my most heavily-used pages seem to be loading before I’ve even finished hitting enter. Still trying to wrap my brain around...

– Krugman, again. Sorry for the double quote, but I feel like he has taken such an enormous leap as a compelling editorialist in the past two years. Throw in the Nobel prize and the fact that he’s been the most on-point voice jumping up and down shouting “there’s something very wrong...

noun • a look shared by two people with each wishing that the other will initiate something that both desire but which neither one wants to start.
The word is from the Yaghan language, and its morphological structure is as follows: mam- (reflexive/passive morph.) + -ihlapi- ‘to be at a loss as to what to do next’ + -n- (stative aspect affix) + -ata- (achievement affix) + -apai...

Late Night with Conan O’Brien’s final episode
Great episode, fantastic guest appearances, fitting way to send off the show…but jesus, that White Stripes “performance” may have been the most disappointing musical appearance in Late Night history. Especially when you remember this classic.

So, this Colorgenics thing
meganmcisaac:
taf:
I tried it once picking the colours…
i disagree. i think they are relatively generic and silly, but i do think it is pretty spot on by what colours you have chosen. if you feel like any answer it gives you is dead on then perhaps that is just you or maybe youre confused about yourself. i have read a few of my friends answers today, that they felt were dead on about them,...

meganmcisaac:
i know a majority of you are only following my for my photographs, so if you hate the personal stuff, please simply skip past this post. i have been trying to avoid posting anything very personal on here, but this explains how i have been feeling lately, probably better than how i could explain myself.
i took this test with a poor attitude, thinking that i hadnt chosen the colours...

A-Rod
Now, I’m a lifetime Red Sox fan who doesn’t want to come off as too thrilled about the latest steroid scandal to hit the Yankees, lest something break about David Ortiz or, god forbid, Pedro…but isn’t this A-Rod stuff the most despicable so far?
The most packaged, self-aware, detail-obsessed player in baseball - a guy who is driven by an overwhelming desire to please, to...

I’m really sorry for how poorly I handled this. Last night, an email circulated at Tumblr that incorrectly implied we were enforcing a new policy on “reblogging-blogs”. Our community director accordingly suspended several accounts that had recently received numerous complaints.
This was brought to my attention late last night, and after deliberation with the team, we decided the most...

The best health insurance for you.
jayparkinsonmd:
For the average person with no significant expensive chronic problems, the best insurance strategy for you is:
Purchase a high deductible health plan for $140 a month (ideally with an associated Health Savings Account (HSA))
Discontinue the traditional, expensive pre-paid health care plan we’re all used to (say this costs $600 a month ($7200 a year))
Put the cost difference...
So here is the deal. I need a white man or woman with short hair, between 40-60,...

The Lives of Others

I went to a second hand store in my neighborhood called Junk this afternoon, mostly to see if they had any nice old cameras for sale (which they did, but only a few and nothing too interesting). Instead of finding any cameras, I ended up by their bin of old photographs, where I must’ve spent quite some time as my stomach had started growling and it had gotten to sunset by the...
Soundtrack of my life.
daisymay:
I decided to tumble this cause it was that fun. And this way I can link to the music!
IF YOUR LIFE WAS A MOVIE, WHAT WOULD THE SOUNDTRACK BE? So, here’s how it works: 1. Open your music library. 2. Put it on shuffle. 3. Press play. 4. For every question, type the song that’s playing. 5. When you go to a new question, press the next button. 6. Don’t lie and try to pretend you’re cool…...
